I hate to be the critical ass hole, but I fucking hate people who try to play the cute nerd act. Being a nerd use to be a bad and unpopular thing. And today’s culture associates anyone who doesnt party, isnt highly social, and has the slightest interest in video games as a nerd. And these phrases don’t really have anything to do with “being a nerd”. Here’s why:
1. Nerd’s arent all insomniacs. It’s retarded to assume that a person who is nerdy stays up all night writing fan fic and playing D&D. That hardly associates directly to being nerdy.
2. Reading makes you a nerd? Trying to force that idea is why reading is so unpopular these days. I hate that being educated is now associated with negative opinons.
3. I’m certain that if a child said that, you wouldn’t call him a nerd. Star Wars is often a nerd culture thing, but you have to keep in mind how many people pretend to be obsessed with star wars just to be “such a nerd lol”, yet don’t know the difference between Boba and Jango Fett.
4. Lets just stick with number 3 for this one too.
5. I think the idea that nerds are smart, witty, and sarcastic people is created solely to make nerd culture more appealing. Not all nerds have quick and clever statements like sheldon. Once upon a time, nerds were anti-social castaways.
6. Do you know how many people use the term noob now? It’s like people who use fail and owned, but hardly use the internet or play video games. We generally pick up popular phrases from our friends without questioning what it means. People just like to use words that are popular.
7. This one is far to common and easy to rant about these days. The “gurl gamer”. People have accepted gaming as a fairly universal and acceptable thing in this era. With the Kinect and Wii, gaming is family oriented. But the second a girl wants to play call of duty she’s a “gurl gamerrr” and she is so nerdy and lame and all the guys will want her now. The fact of the matter is, video games are as common as people who use the internet.
8. Really? Cause need connection to the internet makes you a total nerd. Or maybe you just need to use the internet. Especially since iPhones are so common and internet is just more convenient.
9. I’ll be honest, I don’t even get this one. The only thing that comes to find is the fact that actual CD’s are nearly extinct since digital format is the way of the future. So I guess that kind argues it right there?
And I dont think anyone relates tattoos, piercings, and plugs as nerdy.
^^^ Josh James ladies and gentlemen
FINALLY!!! I’ve been waiting for someone to say this without being blatantly rude, but this is exactly how I feel. Most real nerds are unattractive, smelly and anti-social. The few of us who exist and mingle within the realms of “normal” society are seen as creepy or weird. We’re the ones who you come to in class when you don’t want to do your own work or dump all of the work on in class projects.
Five years ago, this girl would have been Emo/Scene because of it’s popularity (hair piercings and tats give that away). ten years ago, she would have been goth or punk. Were it the early 90s, she’d be wearing plaid and smoking a joint while listening to Nirvana. In the 80s, she’d be snorting cocaine off of whatever surface was closest to her because it was popular. She would have been one of those early 70s pseudo-hippies that did more harm than good to the counter-culture. in the 60s, she would have swooned for every douchebag with a suit, a bad haircut and a guitar. in the 50s, she would have been married at 17 and pregnant with 5 kids (as well as being depressed and alcoholic.) in the 20s, she would have been a flapper.
TL;DR, She’s a “nerd” because it’s cool. she would have been anything if you told her it was cool. And it makes real nerds (moi) angry to see shit like this.
